John Kerry: Support Nick Lampson

Today, two men and half the Republican Party's troubles are appearing side-by-side in Texas. Vice President Dick Cheney is traveling all the way to the Lone Star state to help bail out Tom DeLay by appearing at the embattled Republican leader's fundraiser.

I don't need to tell you what kind of values Tom DeLay represents. You've been reading about it for years - the indictments, cronyism, intimidation - and the countless underhanded legislative maneuvers to put special interests ahead of you and your family.

None of this is new, except for one thing - there is an excellent opportunity to beat him this time. If you help his opponent, Nick Lampson, put up a strong fight, Tom DeLay might soon be an ex-Congressman.

As much as we should all be encouraged by the fact that Republicans have recently been exposed for their failed leadership, the bottom line is that real accountability only comes on Election Day. And there is no greater message we can send about our determination to take back Congress in 2006 than an all-out effort to defeat DeLay himself.

It won't be easy to pull this off. Cheney wouldn't be in Houston today if Republicans weren't taking this race very seriously. But that should only make us want to work harder. That's why I'm challenging all of you to show the power of the Democratic grassroots by joining together to match, in thousands of small donations to DeLay's Democratic opponent, what Dick Cheney raises at his VIP reception with DeLay tonight.

I know it's early, but to win this race, Democrats need to begin building up a grassroots organization in DeLay's district now. And believe me, our candidate, Nick Lampson, is someone well worth your support.

The best way I can put it is this: Tom DeLay is no Nick Lampson. Nick is fiscally responsible and always puts his constituents first. A former Congressman, the Houston Chronicle named Nick the Houston-area Representative who spent the most time and effort on constituent services. On Capitol Hill, Nick founded the Congressional Caucus on Missing and Exploited Kids, where he fought hard for a national Amber Alert program. Nick even received the Congressional Leadership Award from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Nick Lampson showed a lot of guts getting into this race. He's a good man and the perfect candidate to take down Tom DeLay. If we can't get geared up for this race, then that means we just don't have what it takes to win back Congress. But I refuse to believe that.

Let Dick Cheney and Tom DeLay stand side by side in Texas today. There are only two of them, and there are millions of us. Let's help Nick Lampson defeat Tom DeLay -- we'll show that Democrats can win any race, up and down any ticket all across America.

Sincerely,

John Kerry
